It’s that time of year again!!! Last year, the IWIRC Florida Network held its first ever REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR FOOD DRIVE. The event was a huge success and made a difference in several Florida communities and the lives of many families with food insecurity. If you were not able to participate last year, it is simple and fun and guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit.
Step 1: Find a box. Any box will do (Amazon, banker’s box, liquor box).
Step 2: Decorate your box with colleagues, friends, or family. Get your kids or grandchildren involved and let them pick a theme, a movie, or a décor style.
Step 3: Take pictures of your box, your decorating crew, and your donating crew, and post them on social media. Be sure to tag #iwircfladventfoodbox.
Step 4: Each day between now and December 30, put at least 1 non-perishable food item in the box. Suggestions: canned meat (tuna, chicken, spam, chipped beef, Vienna sausage), peanut butter, granola bars, rice, beans, pasta, cereal, canned fruits, canned vegetables, canned soup, ramen, stuffing, canned cranberry sauce, French fried onion rings, boxed mashed potatoes, canned sweat potatoes, boxed desserts (cookies, brownies, cakes)…anything a family would need/want for both holiday and non-holiday meals.
Step 5: Take your box to a local food bank or charity of your choice.
Step 6: Feel good knowing that you have made a difference to families with food insecurity.
The IWIRC Florida network will have awards for the three most creative advent boxes!
